Three ways to type Nepali
-
Romanized typing
Type Nepali words with English letters, the way they sound.
namastebecomes नमस्ते andmero naamabecomes मेरो नाम. Double a vowel for its long form (aa,ee,oo) and use capitals for ट ड ण (T,D,N). The full rule table is below. -
Traditional Unicode layout
For trained typists. Each key types the letter printed on a Nepali Traditional keyboard, in Unicode order: type क and then ि for कि. See the keyboard layout chart.
-
Preeti layout
For people who learned typing on Preeti. Your keys work as they do in Preeti, including typing ि before its letter, but the result is Unicode text that works everywhere. On a phone or tablet, use the on-screen keyboard.
Romanized typing rules
Each word turns into Nepali as you type, and pressing space keeps it. For example:
-
namasteनमस्ते -

Questions and answers
How do I type Nepali online?
Choose Romanized and type words the way they sound, for example namaste for नमस्ते. Each word turns into Nepali as you type, and pressing space keeps it. Press Copy when you are done and paste the text anywhere.
Do I need to install anything?
No. The keyboard runs in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. There is no sign-up and no download.
How do I switch between Nepali and English?
Press Ctrl + G, or use the Nepali and English switch above the text box. In Romanized typing you can also put an English word in curly braces, for example {mobile}, to keep it in English.
Which input method should I use?
Use Romanized if you have not learned a Nepali keyboard. Use the Traditional layout if you type Nepali Unicode by touch, and the Preeti layout if you learned typing on Preeti: your keys work as before, but the result is Unicode.
What is the difference between Unicode and Preeti?
Unicode Nepali is the modern standard and displays correctly on any phone, computer or website. Preeti is an older font that draws Nepali letters on English keys, so Preeti text looks right only where the Preeti font is installed. The converters on this site move text between the two.
Is my text private?
Yes. Typing happens on your device and nothing you type is sent to a server. Your text is saved only in this browser, so it is still there if you close the tab; the Clear button removes it.
