Nepali keyboard layout

Charts for the two Nepali layouts most typists use, with every key and its Shift state. You can type with either layout online.

Traditional Unicode layout

The standard Nepali Unicode layout. Each key types one Unicode letter, sign or conjunct, in the same order as Unicode stores it: type क then ि for कि, and र् ([) before the letter it sits on.

Preeti layout

The key positions of the Preeti font, which many Nepali typists learned first. Here it produces Unicode, so the text works everywhere. Type ि (l) before its letter and the reph ( {) after its syllable, as you would in Preeti; m combines with the key before it (k m for फ).

Questions and answers

Which Nepali keyboard layout should I learn?

If you are starting out, the Traditional Unicode layout types Unicode directly in every app once it is installed on your computer. If you already type Preeti by touch, keep your habits: use the Preeti layout here and get Unicode output.

How is the Preeti layout different from the Traditional layout?

Most letters are on the same keys, but the typing order differs. In Preeti you type ि before its letter and the reph after its syllable. In the Traditional Unicode layout you type in Unicode order: क, then ि.

Can I type with these layouts without installing anything?

Yes. Open the keyboard on the homepage and choose Traditional layout or Preeti layout. Your physical keys follow the chart, and on a phone or tablet you can tap the on-screen keyboard.
