Romanized typing rules

Two schemes are available. Standard is the default. Both share the letters below; they differ only in how you type ं, ँ and how you stop letters joining.

Differences between the two schemes
Rule Standard Classic
Anusvara ं M (haaMsa = हांस) * (ka* = कं)
Chandrabindu ँ NN (haaNNsa = हाँस) ** (haa**sa = हाँस)
Stop letters joining {} (a{}i = अइ) / (k/h = क्ह्)

Vowels

Long vowels use doubled letters. After a consonant a vowel becomes its sign; a adds no sign.

Consonants

Capital T, D, N and Sh type the retroflex letters. A consonant with no vowel after it gets a halant, so k is क् and ka is क.

Other rules

  • {text}: kept as English
  • {}: stops letters combining
  • {{: a literal brace
  • .: danda (not between digits)
  • ..: double danda
  • 0-9: Devanagari digits
  • H after a vowel is the visarga ः ( duHkha = दुःख).
  • Web addresses and email addresses are kept as typed.
  • A capital letter with no rule of its own counts as lowercase, so Ram and ram give the same result.

Examples

You type You get
namaste नमस्ते
nepaala नेपाल
raamro राम्रो
kaaThmaaDauM काठ्माडौं
gyaana ज्ञान
duHkha दुःख
saMskRita संस्कृत

Classic: The older converter convention: * for ं, ** for ँ, and / to stop letters combining. Its letters currently follow the standard scheme.

Known limitations

  • Capital T, D, N and S type ट, ड, ण and ष. End a word with a vowel (nepaala) to avoid a halant.
  • To type ण्ण, put {} between the two N's (N{}Na).
  • The classic scheme's letter rules are still being checked against older converters.

Questions and answers

What is Romanized Nepali?

Nepali written with English letters, the way it sounds: mero naama for मेरो नाम. It is how many people type Nepali on phones and in chat. This converter turns it into proper Devanagari Unicode.

Why does my word end with a halant (्)?

A consonant without a vowel after it keeps its halant. Add the vowel: type nepaala for नेपाल. This makes words like सक् and गर्छन् possible.

Why did Tapaai become टपाइ?

Capital T, D, N and S type the retroflex letters ट, ड, ण and ष, so a capital at the start of a sentence changes the letter. Type tapaai for तपाइ. Capitals that have no rule, such as R or M at the start of a word, count as lowercase.

What is the difference between Standard and Classic?

Standard uses M for ं and NN for ँ. Classic uses * and ** for those marks and / to stop letters joining, as in older Nepali converters. The letters are the same in both.

Can I type directly instead of converting?

Yes. The homepage keyboard converts each word as you type it, using the same rules. This page is for converting text you already have.
