Nepali Unicode Converter Pro

A professional, people-first tool to convert between Preeti or Kantipur font, Nepali Unicode, and Romanized Nepali.

What is the Nepali Font Converter?

The Nepali Font Converter above is a free online tool that switches between
the three ways Nepali text is written on computers and phones —
Preeti / Kantipur (the legacy ASCII font used in newspapers,
government offices, and DTP), Unicode नेपाली (the modern
standard used on the web, in WhatsApp, and on phones), and
Romanized Nepali (typing Nepali by sound in English letters).
Conversion happens entirely in your browser — your text is never uploaded.

How to use the converter

1. Preeti to Unicode

Paste Preeti / Kantipur text such as g]kfn into the left pane.
The Nepali Unicode equivalent (नेपाल) appears on the right
instantly. Use this when you have an old Word document, scanned newsletter,
or PDF in Preeti font and you want it readable on every device.

2. Unicode to Preeti

Paste Nepali Unicode (नमस्ते) and get back Preeti ASCII (gd:t]).
Useful for legacy DTP layouts, magazine printing, government forms, and
any pipeline that still mandates Preeti font submission.

3. Roman to Unicode

Type Nepali by sound — namaste becomes नमस्ते.
Use double vowels for long forms (aa, ee,
oo), capital letters for retroflex consonants
(T, D, N), M for the
anusvara (ं), and NN for chandrabindu (ँ). Perfect for
diaspora Nepalis, students, and anyone without a Devanagari keyboard.

Why convert Preeti to Unicode?

Preeti was designed in the 1990s before Unicode was widespread — it stores
Devanagari letters under English ASCII codes. That means a Preeti document
only displays as Nepali on a device with the Preeti font installed; on every
other phone, browser, search engine, or social media app it shows up as
gibberish like g]kfn instead of नेपाल. Unicode
solves this — your converted text is searchable on Google, readable on every
mobile phone, and works in WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, Viber,
Instagram, YouTube comments, Gmail, and WordPress.

Nepali typing tips

  • Use the Nepali keyboard on this site to type Devanagari directly without the converter.
  • Drop the trailing a in Roman mode to get a halant — k = क्, t = त्.
  • For Kathmandu in Roman mode, type kathmandu — capital
letters are reserved for retroflex consonants only.
  • Numbers can stay as Western digits (1, 2, 3) or become Devanagari digits (१, २, ३) depending on the mode.
  • Conjuncts like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, द्ध are handled automatically — no special key combinations needed.

Who is this tool for?

  • Journalists & editors — convert Preeti newspaper archives into Unicode for online publishing.
  • Government and lok sewa staff — round-trip between Preeti government forms and Unicode email.
  • Students preparing for लोक सेवा आयोग — convert Preeti past papers into Unicode notes.
  • Diaspora Nepalis in the US, UK, Australia, Japan, Korea, UAE, Qatar, and Malaysia — type Nepali by sound from any phone or laptop.
  • WordPress & Shopify owners — paste old Preeti content and republish in Unicode for SEO.
  • Authors & bloggers — write Nepali poems (कविता), lyrics, and stories without installing a Devanagari keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Nepali font converter free?

Yes, completely free. No sign-up, no paywall, no watermarks on the output. Use it as much as you like.

Does my text get uploaded to a server?

No. All three converters run 100% in your browser. You can disconnect Wi-Fi after the page loads and conversions still work. Nothing is logged.

Which Nepali fonts does the Preeti converter support?

The character map is calibrated for Preeti and the closely related Kantipur and PCS Nepali fonts. Most common words convert identically across all three. For older fonts like Sagarmatha, Himalb, or Ananda, results may vary on uncommon glyphs.

Can I type Nepali on my phone with this tool?

Yes — the converter is mobile-first with large tap targets, swipe-friendly tabs, and a one-tap copy button so you can paste straight into WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, or email. For typing Nepali directly on your phone, see our online Nepali keyboard.

How is the Romanized to Nepali typing different from a keyboard?

A Devanagari keyboard requires you to learn the layout (Traditional or Romanized InScript). The Roman mode here lets you type by sound — if you can spell “namaste” in English, you can type नमस्ते. Faster for casual messaging; slower for long-form writing where a keyboard wins.

Can I use this on my own website?

Yes — partner integration is documented at utilitysansar.com/docs/embed. The widget is licensed for Nepali Keyboard, ShuklaNews, HealthNewsNepal, and the wider TechSansar / UtilitySansar partner family.
