Unicode and legacy fonts

Unicode gives every Devanagari letter its own code, so Nepali text displays the same on every phone, computer and website, and search engines can read it. Preeti and Kantipur are older fonts that place Nepali letter shapes on the keys of an English keyboard. Text typed in them is stored as English letters and only looks like Nepali while that font is in use.

Converting from a legacy font is more than swapping letters. Preeti stores text in the order you see it, so the ि sign comes before its letter and the reph ( र् above a letter) comes after its syllable. The converter moves both into Unicode order, joins half letters into conjuncts such as क्ष and त्र, and returns standard (NFC) Unicode.

To see Preeti text as Nepali letters, the Preeti font must be installed on the computer that opens the document. Unicode Nepali needs no extra font: phones, computers and browsers already include one.

How to use it

  1. Choose the conversion.
  2. Paste or type your text in the first box. The result appears straight away.
  3. Press Copy result or Download .txt.
  4. Use Swap direction to convert the result back and check it.

Known limitations

  • English words and ordinary digits inside Preeti text turn into Nepali letters. Fix them after converting, or convert only the Preeti parts.
  • A few rare Preeti symbols are still being verified against real documents.
  • English text, numbers in English digits and a few special characters are left as they are and will not show correctly in the Preeti font.
  • Two dandas in a row come back as the double danda ॥.
  • A stray ि at the end of a word is kept as typed.
  • Capital T, D, N and S type ट, ड, ण and ष. End a word with a vowel (nepaala) to avoid a halant.
  • To type ण्ण, put {} between the two N's (N{}Na).
  • The classic scheme's letter rules are still being checked against older converters.

Questions and answers

Which conversion should I choose?

If your text looks like random English letters (for example g]kfn), it is in a legacy font: choose Preeti to Unicode, or Kantipur to Unicode if the document used Kantipur. If you need text for a document that still uses Preeti or Kantipur, choose Unicode to Preeti or Unicode to Kantipur. If you typed Nepali with English letters, choose Romanized to Unicode.

Is the conversion done on a server?

No. Every conversion runs in your browser, so your text never leaves your device. It also works after the page has loaded even if your connection drops.

Why does converted Preeti text look like gibberish?

Preeti and Kantipur store Nepali letters on English keys. Without the matching font, those keys show as English letters and symbols. Paste the result into a document and set the font to Preeti or Kantipur to see Nepali.

Can I convert a whole Word document?

Copy the text from the document, paste it into the converter and copy the result back. Formatting such as bold or tables is not kept, because the converter works on plain text.
