What the converter fixes

Preeti stores Nepali as English keyboard characters in the order the letters appear on screen. A Unicode converter has to do more than swap characters:

  • The short i sign ि is typed before its letter in Preeti (l) but belongs after the whole letter cluster in Unicode.
  • The reph (र् drawn above a letter, key {) is typed after its syllable in Preeti and moves to the front in Unicode.
  • Half letters and conjuncts such as क्ष, ज्ञ, द्ध and श्र are joined correctly.
  • Vowels built from two keys, such as cf] for ओ, become one letter.

Tips for clean results

  • Copy the text as plain text if you can; formatting is not converted.
  • Convert only the Preeti parts of a mixed document. English words inside Preeti text change into Nepali letters.
  • Use Swap direction to turn the result back into Preeti and compare.

To see Preeti text as Nepali letters, the Preeti font must be installed on the computer that opens the document. Unicode Nepali needs no extra font: phones, computers and browsers already include one.

Known limitations

  • English words and ordinary digits inside Preeti text turn into Nepali letters. Fix them after converting, or convert only the Preeti parts.
  • A few rare Preeti symbols are still being verified against real documents.
  • Two dandas in a row come back as the double danda ॥.
  • A stray ि at the end of a word is kept as typed.

Questions and answers

How do I know my text is in Preeti?

Preeti text shows Nepali only where the Preeti font is set. Change the font, or paste it into this page, and it turns into English letters and symbols such as g]kfn (नेपाल) or sf7df8f}+ (काठमाडौं).

How do I convert a Preeti Word document to Unicode?

Open the document, select the text and copy it. Paste it into the Preeti text box here, then copy the Unicode result and paste it back into your document or a new one. Set the font to any Unicode Nepali font, or leave the default.

Why did my English words or numbers change?

Preeti uses the English keys for Nepali letters, so English words and ordinary digits inside Preeti text turn into Nepali letters too. Nepali digits typed in Preeti (with Shift) convert correctly. Fix English words and digits by hand after converting.

Does this also work for Kantipur or other fonts?

Kantipur has its own converter because a few keys differ. Text from other legacy fonts may convert partly; check the result carefully.
