How to type difficult Nepali letters

Type the sounds in order and the letters join by themselves: kra gives क्र, pra gives प्र, ksha gives क्ष and gya gives ज्ञ. Use M for anusvara (ं), NN for chandrabindu (ँ) and H for visarga (ः).

Typing kra gives क्र, pra gives प्र, ksha gives क्ष, gya gives ज्ञ, M gives anusvara and NN gives chandrabindu

These are the rules of the standard Romanized scheme, the default in the online Nepali keyboard. Every example on this page was checked against the keyboard itself, so you can type it exactly as shown.

Half letters and conjuncts

A consonant becomes a half letter when no vowel follows it. Type the letters in the order you hear them, and they join.

Type You get
kra क्र
pra प्र
tra त्र
shree श्री
kta क्त
swa स्व
dwaara द्वार
ddha द्ध
hma ह्म
kya क्य
arko अर्को

The last example shows the curl above a letter (रेफ). Type r with no vowel before the next consonant, and र् sits on top of that letter, as in अर्को.

क्ष, ज्ञ and त्र

Three conjuncts have their own spellings:

Type You get
ksha क्ष
kshetra क्षेत्र
gya ज्ञ
gyaana ज्ञान
gYa ग्य
tra त्र

Use gY (capital Y) when you need ग्य rather than ज्ञ.

Retroflex letters: ट, ठ, ड, ढ, ण, ष

Capital letters give the retroflex sounds:

Type You get
Ta ट
Tha ठ
Da ड
Dha ढ
Na ण
Sha ष

Chandrabindu, anusvara and visarga

Type You get
saMsaara संसार
haaNNsa हाँस
chaaNNda चाँद
duHkha दुःख

M adds the dot (ं), NN adds the moon and dot (ँ) and H after a vowel adds visarga (ः). In the classic scheme, type * for ं and ** for ँ instead.

ऋ, ङ and ञ

Type You get
Ri ऋ
kRiShi कृषि
Nga ङ
yNa ञ

Ending a word and keeping letters apart

  • A consonant at the end of a word keeps its halant: nepaal gives नेपाल्. Add a to finish it: nepaala gives नेपाल.
  • Type {} between two letters to stop them joining: k{}ha gives क्ह.
  • Wrap English words in braces to keep them as they are: {Facebook} stays Facebook.
  • A full stop gives the danda: . gives ।

All of these examples fit on one page: download the difficult letters cheat sheet (A4 PDF), or see all printable charts.

Questions and answers

In the standard Romanized scheme, type NN (two capital N) after the vowel: haaNNsa gives हाँस. In the classic scheme, type two asterisks instead.

A consonant with no vowel after it keeps its halant, so nepaal gives नेपाल्. Add a to finish the letter: nepaala gives नेपाल.

How do I stop two letters from joining?
